I have dinner in it & want to know if it's safe to have it on while I'm gone or will it start a fire?? I had it on for a few hours & went to move the cord & when I touched it I felt a teeny tiny zap....didn't hurt at all, but still is it safe to leave it on?

Thank you all!!! I definitely will NOT use it!!! I figured if it wasn't making sparks it would be okay as long as I didn't touch it, but I guess that's not the case! Better safe than sorry!

No, No, NO, if you see any bare wire showing it is not safe, you need to replace the cord or throw out the crock pot and buy a new one. One dinner isn't worth burning down the whole house.

Danger!

Bare wires that spark (zap) should not be used and should not be left unattended. Unplug your crock-pot immediately and either replace it or have it serviced by a qualified technician (check your instruction manual or the manufacturer's web site for their nearest service centre). That zap you felt didn't hurt this time, but it could electrocute you next time.

If you are considering having it repaired, call and get an estimate first. With the lower-cost models, it will cost you less to replace the unit, plus you have a new warranty. The more costly units may well be worth having repaired. Please don’t do this yourself, get it done by a qualified person.

The people who told you to turn it off are wrong. You have to unplug it. The cord is bad and could start a fire. Replace the cord or the entire unit. Don't use it as it is. And don't try to repair the cord. Just replace the crock pot. Cook on the stove this time.

Hi Mamma, Don't use that appliance until someone who knows about electricity and cords takes a good look at it. It may need a new cord or just a good repair, but either way make sure it is fixed before you use it.

Remember, Safety First!

I would hate a fire to start over something small like a bare wire.

I would definitely turn it off! First of all, there are bare wires, which is never a good sign. Secondly, you got a zap from touching it. You need to turn it off, unplug it, and throw that crock pot away. I know your dinner gets wasted, but it's better than your house burning down.

BigM,
if it were my Crockpot I wouldn't use it. This may put a damper on your dinner this evening and your ability to keep things easy on yourself. However, considering that you are a no nonsense type of person I am rather surprised you would even ask that question in this forum.

Don't use it BigM. Consider this your scolding for the day. It would be more of a pain to come home and not have a place to come home to rather than to have to come up with different dinner plans. Lets see; do I want to have to move this evening with nothing or do I want to have to an alternative plan for dinner...choices, choices.

Take care and have a great day!

Gerry :)

NO NO NO Don't use it until you get the thing repaired. It presents a safety hazard. Electrical shock or even a fire hazard. The fact that you felt a shock should have told you to turn it off. With the price of crock pots so low, just get a new one. Be safe -------- please???

No, turn it off. The exposed wiring can start an electrical fire, and if it was exposed enough to just zap you by touching it, it's fairly self-explanatory that it's dangerous.
