If you installed XP and it works then you did it right.
your sound is driver related "on your computer"?
you need to find out the sound card make and model then download the correct driver.
good luck....

Do you not have "restore" disks from the manufacturer of the PC? If you do not, you may be able to get them from the manufacturer (which you do not state, but you can Google it).
The restore disk not only has the operating system (o/s i.e. Windows) it also has the drivers for all the hardware that came with the computer.
The drivers are software that allow windows to communicate with your hardware, if the drivers aren't installed part of your hardware will not work, which is the problem you have now with the sound card.
There are many different sound cards out there (brands), you computer likely has an "integrated" sound card (which means it is part of the mother board) and every brand or sound card has different drivers, which means that if you do not know which specific sound card you have it will be difficult to obtain the drivers, hence the "restore" disk.
BTW when you inserted the Windows disk in the CD/DVD tray and started the computer with it you "booted" the computer from the CD/DVD.

well it sounds that all that is happening is that you dont have the drivers for the sound card. just pop the case back open if you are not sure what kind of sound card it is, and then write down the information. if the sound card is on-board, which means there is no physical peice sticking out from one of the expansion slots, then write down the motherboards model and number. if you dont have a disk for the motherboard drivers, then go online to the manufacturers website. (eg: hp computer-hp.com). if you want a little more information, feel free to email me.

Can you hear any sound? if not check What kind of Sound Card do you have in your computer?
If you know the brand name or model, go to the manufacturer website download the drivers, your sound card will work.
