Planes and trains are running $200+ RT. Looking for around $130 RT (the distance is equal to NY to DC!) This is in November.

Did you check the bus lines?
Eurolines is one of the better known companies:

I can not get the page for Italy, but it comes in Rome and Venice, so I would bet you can use it to travel from one to the other too.

By the way, travel distances and prices are not always directly related, and each European country has its own rail price system.

I just checked www.trenitalia.com - 2nd class Eurostar trains between Roma Termini and Venezia S. Lucia are going for €51 each way per person. That translates to €102 or about US$140 round trip. This is going to be your best bet.
