Felines - that is what I hate. Change change, change, that is too fast you can't have time to enjoy it before its changed again!

Debi_2000 - We still have a KMart in our area although Walmart and Target rule. Guess this KMart brings in big bucks, probably why they did not close

Oh, Lordy, there have been sooo many it's hard to keep count. First we lost our two big department stores, Miller & Rhoads and Thalhimers. They were replaced by Hecht's and Leggett, which became first Belk, then Proffitt's and finally Dillard's.
Now Hecht's is Macy's and has some competition with the recent addition of Saks Fifth Avenue and Nordstrom.
As for restaurants, Chi Chi's has tried twice to make a go of it here and it just hasn't worked. Chuck E Cheese also tried twice, and the second time it took.
We recently lost Julian's, an Italian restaurant that has been an area staple since I can remember.
And banks! We're still at the same bank we've been with since we were married (just celebrated 25), but it's been through several incarnations. Started as Bank of Virginia, then became Signet, then First Union and now Wachovia.

Oscar's Drive In. (they waited on cars by rollerskating out your orders.) Woolworth, Kresge, W.T. Grant, Joske's, Ben Franklin 5 and 10 cent stores. Corner Drug Stores with soda fountains, Gas Stations where an attendant checked the oil, water, air in tires and cleaned the windshield.

I have dozens of credit cards from now-defunct sores, from Gimbels to Altman's to Burdines to...
Whatever happened to Roy Rogers? Roller skate Drive-ins? Woolworth's? Hot Shoppes? Kresge's? Chock Full O Nuts? Howard Johnson's?

Woolworths
Hales Dept. Store, then it became Penny's
Emporium. They had great front windows and there was always something new to see in their displays. And every Cristmas they would be all decorated up. And on the roof you
could go visit Santa, and they had carnival type rides and a ice skating rink, up there.
This was in San Francisco at 5th & Market

Do you remember, of course you do, the drive-in restaurants? I miss those, I miss a lot of things - do you recall your parents or perhaps you loading up the car with the kids, homemade popcorn, blankets and pillows and hitting the drive-in theatres? Doing the same as teenagers and seeing who's car windows were "all steamed up" so you could tease them later? LOL I remember people calling them "Passion pits" :-)
