YOU SHOULD GET THE VEHICLES COMPUTER SCANNED AND CHECK FOR ANY PROBLEMS AS WELL AS CODES AND THEN YOU WILL HAVE A GOOD IDEA ON WHAT THE PROBLEM TRULY IS.
TRY FINDING AN INDEPENDENT SHOP INSTEAD OF THE DEALER OR A CHAIN STORE BECAUSE YOU WILL BE OVERALL MORE PLEASED WITH THE FINDINGS AND THE SERVICE.
LEAVE IT THERE WITH THEM SO THAT THEY CAN FIND THE PROBLEM FOR YOU, IT WILL BE A LOT BETTER THAN JUST REPLACING PART AFTER PART AND NOT DOING ANY GOOD.

The choke may be staying on too long. Easy enough to check. The next time it does this, pull over, leave it running, open up the air cleaner and see if the choke is closed. If so, hold it open with a aligator clip, and see if it makes a difference. If the choke is already open, try closing it a bit and hold it there with the clip.
If the choke stays on too long, the car will run too rich and if the choke comes off too soon, the car will run too lean. If the problem goes away after the engine is good and warmed up, it is probably the choke.

I can almost guarantee the engine has alot of miles so,I reccommend pulling the head, send it to a machine shop like Big A,or Napa.Tell them you want a valve job, knurl the valve guides, and to shave the head 10,000 and replace the cam followers and the cam .Won't cost you too much but very worth it.I myself pulled the entire engine and rebuilt mine.Did the same as I am reccomending to you and buddy it's beautiful. If you're looking for a quick fix, yeah go with new plugs, and rotor and cap, wires. To set the timing correct is so easy.On your cam wheel you have a little whole see it?Now line it like to the top.You can look on the back of the timing plate to see another whole to line it with and as far as the crank just remove first plug and bring the piston to the top,now undo the distributor cap, turn the wheel where the timing is to move the rotor to number one wire and then once all three is done, replace the belt.Good luck and if you need help holler at me.

If you had that engine at that speed, you probably had it wound tighter than a Banjo string...
85 chevette was designed as a urban fuel stingy transportation... it doesn't have a great lifespan,
it's almost 23 model years old....Dude, whatya want?

I would try a tune up and especially concentrate on those spark plugs, as well as the fuel line.

you might have some of your sensors going bad. i'd check the catalic converter, and perhaps the coil is getting hot and separating.
