My son did the same thing. He started the arching because of refulx and eventually his back muscles got really strong and he'd do it all the time. He grew out of the reflux and quit arching as soon as he was more mobile and found more fun things to do. I'd still tell her to ask her doctor about it!

I would tell the doctor that, but all babies do arch their back a bit. It's important to tell the doctor anything, and mothers go often enough to do it.
I dropped both my babies once each because they arched when I was holding them. It's freaky if you're not used to it, but neither of them have any problems.
Just the same, I'd tell your friend she should mention it to the nurse or doctor. I'm also wondering if the baby looks arched when it's sleeping. That might be a sign that it's more than just a gassy baby arch.

Has the baby been examined by a doctor and perhaps a pediatric neurologist? A young infant shouldn't be arching her back "into a C shape" constantly. It could be a sign of a disorder.

back arching is a sign of Reflux in babies. Alot of silent refluxers do this. They do not actually spit up their food, but instead they just feels the burn through their esophagus. Sometimes gas or colic can do this too.
I would have the baby go to the doctor for reflux. Have them get it checked out!

I don't think so, my nephew is 8 months old and still has his arms stretch wide out like wings. The doctor has said his fine he will eventually rest his arms side by side. I would take your baby girl to a child caring place, here in Perth we have a place called Ngala Family Resource Centre

This doesn't seem normal, I would take her to the doctor to find out why she would be arching her back all of the time.

Her bones are so soft now that it probably will not affect he future development. If her back is always in this position I would worry that something is causing the curvature though. What has her doc said?

My assumption is she does that b/c of gas. I would ask the pediatrician to check the baby to see if she is colicky.
