Everyone seems to be forgetting the piece that was destroyed when his Killing Curse rebounded in Godric's Hollow.

1)Slytherin Locket
2)Hufflepuff Cup
3)Ravenclaw Diadem
4)Nagini
5)Diary
6)Ring
7)Harry Potter
8)Voldemort (After Godric's Hallow)

So didn't Voldemort think he made 8 horcruxes and not 7 like it states in the book

Voldemort wanted his soul to be in seven pieces because it's a special number in magic.

Voldemort's intention was to make 6 horcruxes and have what remained in his body be the 7th. With the inclusion of Harry, it makes for 8 pieces, yes, but Voldemort himself isn't a horcrux. There is no 9th piece.

Voldemort had 8 parts to his soul all of which you've listed except I would clarify that 8 (Voldemort) means the part that still resides in Voldemort himself, which however ripped, tattered and unstable, has always been there. The only thing that happened in Godric's Hallow is another bit of his soul ripped off and went into Harry. The part that's always been in Voldemort wasn't a horocrux, though I disagree that Harry wasn't a horcrux. He wasn't made like a horcrux and it certainly wasn't intentional, but he does fit the basic definition of a horcrux, storing a bit of one's soul outside the body.

And Voldemort only thought he made six horcruxes, the seventh part was suppose to be the bit that stayed with him. He didn't know about the 8th bit of his soul that was stored in Harry. That ignorance is what made Harry successful in the end.

Voldemort intended to have a seven part soul, consisting of 6 horcruxes and the soul in his body. He accidentally made 7 horcruxes, which were:

1)Slytherin Locket
2)Hufflepuff Cup
3)Ravenclaw Diadem
4)Nagini
5)Diary
6)Ring
7)Harry Potter

However, Voldemort did not know there was a piece of his soul in Harry. So in the end Voldemort had a 8 part soul, which was what made him so unstable and contributed to his defeat!

Hi!
I don't think the Killing Curse in Godric's Hollow ended up destroying ANY Horcrux.

Voldemort intended to divide his soul in 7 parts (considering the significance of the number "7". So, with this in mind, he made 6 horcruxes (The diary, the locket, the cup, the diadem, the ring and Nagini). And -in his mind- that was it.
6+1part still with him = 7!

Then... came the Potters. And the night he tries to kill Harry, without noticing he put a bit of himself into Harry, making him a Horcrux. So... He made 7 Horcruxes + the part of his soul that managed to survive the incident = 8.

That's 8 parts of the soul, not 8 Horcruxes. The Horcruxes are 7 :)

Goodluck!

It states in the book that the six horcruxes were:-

Diary
Ring
Locket
Cup
Diadem
Nagina

and the seventh part of the soul was in Voldemort himself.

There was also a part of the soul in Harry.

That makes 7 horcruxes plus Voldemort himself - which is 8 parts (not 9). At Godrics Hollow it was Voldemorts body that was destroyed and his soul split.

Its true that Voldemort wasnt a horcrux, HOWEVER, he still has a piece of soul inside himself, therefore he is kinda like a horcrux.

Harry's scar was a horcrux!! Your number 8 is a little off though. When Voldemort tried to kill baby Harry, he split his soul, and thus made the Harry/scar horcrux. When the killing curse rebounded, his soul was split, and the piece that he was intending to use as a horcrux, ended up in Harry, thus the scar. Technically there were 8 horcruxes, including the miniscule piece of soul residing inside Voldemort.

The real question is what object was Voldemort intending on incasing his horcrux in, the night that he attempted to kill Harry.

Yeh - I would think that saving a piece of yourself in yourself is kinda redundant. When the curse rebounded, he had made a horcrux of Harry.

I must say though, its a good question. I have no idea what to read now. Have moved on to various other books (as I always did) but there is no mystery about Harry any more because its all been closed off.

And Alana is slightly mistaken. Harry was a horcrux.

Keep thinking of those questions so that we can all still ponder over it and discuss it!

Voldemort did not intend to make Harry a Horcrux. When the curse rebounded upon him, a part of his soul went inside Harry, causing the connection between V and Harry.

I do understand what you mean about the Voldemort before he tried killing baby Harry. I think that is the same soul as the older Voldemort, because when he died, he was still clinging to life, and so it was the same bit of soul.

Voldemort is not a horcrux. Read more carefully in book 6. Dumbledore said Voldemort made 6 Horcruxes and Voldemort himself is the seventh piece of his soul in his original plan. What he didn't know was he made Harry Potter a horcrux making it seven horcruxes.

Voldemort himself is not a Horcrux, but is actually the remanant of himself from 17 years ago and is still that same part of soul.

Voldemort, himself, isn't a Horcrux. You're missing the whole point of Horcruxes. Yes, there was a piece that was destroyed when his killing curse rebounded, but that was Harry. The "main" soul isn't a Horcrux.
