I am terribly shy, so shy that I avoid social situations whenever possible at all costs and always try and end conversations as quickly as possible. I don't want to be like this, I want to be fun, social and confident. How do you think I could make some steps in a more positive direction?

I've got social anxiety and I've worked on this my whole life. I am better now than I was a few years ago, though. The trick is to work on your small talk, so that you never feel awkward in a group and so that you always have something to talk about. There's a lot of confidence in knowing what you're talking about and having something to say on a lot of subjects.

Afirmations - lots of them. Tell yourself that you are fun social and confident often and daily. It works. We are all shy to some extent. Its our selftalk that sabatages us. Change the negative selftalk or recognize when you are doing it. Then repeat your affirmations! Good luck!

Oh and I agree with the poster above saying to chat with others whereever possible. Try to begin to chat up anyone you see. A smile and a hi is all you need to start communicating. The more you do it the easier it becomes.

I used to be shy and in order to get out of this phase, as a youth, I threw myself in courses such as speech, debate, drama; later as an adult I picked jobs that forced me to present myself in front of people and eventually got through it Now I roar like a tiger!
