Boxing in America is being replaced by MMA (Mixed Martial Arts). Also there is a dramatic decline in African Americans interested in boxing. Those African Americans that would Box are now playing professional football and basketball. One of the downsides of Boxing is how athletes get paid. In Boxing athletes are paid per fight. Often there are fees that are associated with management, training and promotion. This means Boxers get far least than they planned and they don't get their money right away. Sometimes it could take up to 60 days before a Boxer gets paid. In other sports athletes are under contract and get paid on a regular basis. Also there are not a lot of fees associated with training and management. This is also why big fights often go awry. The negotiations for the boxer's pay out can be lengthy if the boxer feels he's not getting a fair deal. In foreign markets the pay is less but steadier. Therefore boxing is bigger in places like Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Eastern Europe and Russia. Still MMA is taking the world by storm is I don't see any slowing down in the foreseeable future.

I think the most played sport is Basketball because most people or kids live in the city and to play football, baseball, or soccer you need green space and the only place where there is green space is in a park but basketball you do not need green space and it is easier to find a basketball Court than some green space to play any other sport. So that is what I think is the most played sport in the U.S.A but that is not what you asked you asked What do you think is the most popular American sport? and it is really hard to choose I think I would have to choose 3 Football, Basketball, and baseball.

I am a Baseball Fan and it is my favorite sport but I would have to say the most popular American Sport has to be Football both at the College Level (NCAA) and at the Professional Level (NFL).

More and more kids are starting to play basketball but still the most popular american sport is football. Superbowl sunday is bigger than the world series and the NBA championshp and all that. As my opinion i love baseball but still College Football is probably the most exciting too, especially when you go to the games. I live in Chicago and I absolutely love going to Notre Dame games. The atmosphere is amazing.

Football (not soccer) by far. Baseball may be America's pasttime, but when they play 162 regular season games it gets old. I would guess the most popular list would go:
1. NFL
2. NCAA basketball
3. MLB
4. NCAA football
5. NBA
Hockey, soccer, tennis, golf, mma and a host of others are somewhere further down the list.
