I've been watching some shows online from other countries, like Britain, France, Switzerland, etc. and I realize they have better writing, greater ideas, and aren't focused so much on Reality TV. So why is it that these countries have great tv, and America, with so many companies and budgets, can't produce anything but crap?

Maybe because here in America, we put any and everything on TV that shouldn't really be there. I guess in other countries, they have a good intentions for TV and it's mainly to educate their audience and entertain them in a positive way. Here in America, the main purpose is to entertain and you can see that because many of us don't pay attention to the important stuff.

As a Brit, there is some quality American Tv Shows, The Shield, Sopranos, CSI, Law & Order, Heroes etc, unfortunately Tv companies across the globe have realised that reality shows are a money spinner, premium call voting lines and relatively cheap production costs mean we are unindated with reality carp The BBC does make some good documentuaries and some good dramas and comedy series but we fund that by paying £120ish a year for a licence.
What gets me is when I watch Tv when in the states is the number of ads you guys have that would drive me nuts.

Because of the mentality of those in charge of programming at the American networks.
They are in the "monkey see, monkey do" mindset. If one network does well with a hospital drama, all the networks have to scramble to get a hospital drama.
If a network gets good ratings with a game show, then all the networks scramble to create a similar game show.
Gone are the days of trying innovative, original programming. With the networks constantly losing ground to specialized cable channels, they're scared of doing anything gutsy. Instead, they play to the least common denominator of the viewing public.
I'd like to have my own channel. I would only put intelligent shows on it (Max Headroom, The West Wing, Commander in Chief, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, etc). I would ban any game show that didn't air before the first time "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" was on.
And I'd play a James Bond or Jason Bourne movie every Friday night.

They don't want to spend any money on creative writing or program development. Wave a few $$$s and people will try anything for fifteen minutes of fame. They have adopted the Youtube mentality.

It may simply be what you prefer vs what others prefer. Don't forget that the Government and the Media decide what we should see/hear.

there is just not much on network tv
the cables work harder at original programming (hbo, showtime)
whereas the networks are focus group whores and dumb it down to the lowest common denominator too much

Because it seems to do well. Americans seem to enjoy crap. They like eating it, buying it and watching it.
