7/8 is about 1. 31/4 is almost 8. Together it's almost 9. But I think you mean 3 and 1/4, not 3/14. 1 plus 3 and 1/4 is about 4 and 1/4, or about 4, so d. Estimation is an important skill, and I know this question specifically asks you to estimate, but normally I would just do the math.

d or b depending on how you interpret 31/4 as 31 over 4 else 3 and 1/4...they rest of the answers may be correct if you define estimate...to the nearest one...or nearest 1/2, etc.

7/8 + 13/4 = 7/8+26/8 = 33/8,
which is very close to 4(= 32/8).

(7/8) + (3 and 1/4)
= 1 + 3
= 4
