You are referring to Igor Sikorsky. He did not invent the very first helicopter, but he developed the first successful one, which became the foundation for all future helicopter designs. The company he founded, Sikorsky Aircraft, remains a leading name in helicopters.

The previous answers are correct. However, it was a Spaniard, de la Serna, who developed the precursor to the helicopter with his auto giro, which was a regular airplane which had freewheeling vertical propeller. This allowed it to land vertically very smoothly, stopping it in midair.
