It depends which 3 series model year you're talking about. On E36 and older, you need a special reset tool. It is recommended that you buy one of these tools if you plan on changing your oil on your own often. My neighborhood garage has the reset tool and charges $5 for each reset. I still think it's expensive!
Taking the car to the dealer is a waste of money for this service unless they're willing to do this for you for no charge.
Here're some examples (from eBay):

You can also manually reset the service indicator by using a paperclip and shorting (jumping) specific pins on the connection port in the engine bay, but you need to be careful because the service light that comes on the next time around (Oil service, inspection 1, inspection 2) would depend on how long you TIME your jump connection. You can easily Google this.
On E46 cars, you can reset this sitting comfortably on your drivers seat in the car!
Here's how:

Depending on the 3 series (E30, E36, E46, E9X) there may be more than one way to reset the lights. On an E36(92-99) you can either plug in a reset tool (computer) into the OBD port in the engine bay and reset it. Or you can reset it by jumping some of the pins in the port.(Not recommended) I believe on the E46 you may have the same options. I'm unsure of th methods on the E9X 3's but I'm sure it the same with the computer.
Take it to the dealer and many times they will reset it for free. Give them a call and ask about it.
Yeah, the dealers do work for free occasionally!

most cars have some type of reset button but there are some that require special equipment that needs to be hooked up to reset your oil gauge...your best bet is to consult with your bmw service center

Don't disconnect the battery, that won't do it for that car. That will just turn your ABS light on too. Take it to a dealership and ask them to reset it.
