Ferrets are WONDERFUL!! However, you need to understand their personalities and needs and make sure they have the things they need to make them happy. They are real comedians. They run, hop, bounce, flip, and generally run crazy! They pick your pockets, steal anything shiny, and are real whirlwinds...when they're awake. They need a large cage with a litter box area and a food/water area in it. They love having a ferret hammock to sleep in. Their cage must be kept very clean. They are not the kind of pet you can ignore for long periods of time. They'll cuddle in your arms, perch on your head, eat your earrings, pick through your hair (as they do with each other), and try to take the gum from your mouth.

Ferrets are great pets. At least I think. They are not for everyone and occasionally you come across a ferret that has 'behavioral issues'. I have four and have no problems whatsoever besides the regular ferret behavior. You have to be a very clean and organized person to own ferrets. The room you keep them in MUST be ferret proofed. With a little common sense regarding cleaning and regular 'freshening' habits odor is pretty minimal. The people that say "Oh my gosh...ferrets reek horrible." are the people who keep their animals dirty and are probably dirty themselves.
Here is a great website for beginners. http://www.ferretsr1.org

Go for it! I had 2 and miss them SO much. They can be little crooks, so watch them because they'll find a hiding place for their stash. They'll provide hours of laughter! They love to dance and play and be chased. Get them one of those 6' see-through plastic tubes; tie it in knots or lie it flat - they love running and playing in them. Mine would chase balls or whatever I'd toss to them. You really can't leave them unsupervised, though. They're very curious and if their head can fit somewhere, their bodies will follow. They can be litter trained. They have a high metabolism and eat frequently, so leave food and water where they can get it, in addition to being in their cage. Enjoy!
