In the suburbs, I'd stay away from Dorchester, Roxbury, Mattapan, Hyde Park. Someone else said Jamaica Plain, but that's not really true at all, it's really nice, especially along the VFW Parkway. Somerville is good, Malden, Revere, Everett, Watertown, Cambridge, Forest Hills, West Roxbury, and Brookline are all nice areas to live but all still connected by the T or by bus service. Good luck searching!

Even though most of the neighborhoods in the suburban places "around Boston" I will mention are perfectly safe, they still have some bad sections, judging from the major crimes that show up frequently in the papers . Randolph, Quincy, Woburn, Waltham have some bad neighborhoods.

If you are talking inner city rather than suburbs you need to be more selective and get your cues from the realtor. There are some really nasty sections where you could turn into tomorrow's homicide statistic in a drive-by moment.

If that "Sun Urban area" is the one in Burlington with the huge Sun building it is not urban. It is suburban and in an area with a lot of apartments.

Woburn, Waltham Stoneham have lots of new apartments in good neighborhoods and I am sure there is competitive pressure on them to make deals for renting.

The suburbs are relatively safe. In Boston I would avoid Mattapan, parts of Roxbury and Dorchester. The suburbs south of Boston ie. Quincy/Braintree are all nice and accessible to Boston via the T. Really anything south is fine, some of it is upscale if you go down to Hanover, Norwell, Duxbury, Hingham, Scituate etc.. but that is fairly far out of the city especially if there is traffic.

Brockton is a western city that could be considered a Boston suburb and I would not recommend it.

Roxbury/Hyde Park are bad- but that's mostly in the town. Brockton isn't the best place....
Weymouth, Randolphy, Braintree, Quincy, Norwood, Holbrook, and HIngham are all good places south of Boston..

Your best bet would probably be Braintree or Quincy, Watertown, Somerville relatively safe areas that are located right on the T for easy access to Boston.

I have lived in Greater Boston all my life and there are lots of places that are "not safe". If you are white - I would suggest the wrong neighborhoods would be Roxbury first, Mattapan, possibly Dorchester. If you are not white, you might want to steer clear of South Boston, and Charlestown.
Hope this helps...
