Revolt caused in 1857. It was near 1900 actually. In fact, to be precise, it was THREE MINUTES to SEVEN O CLOCK.
If you waited for a full REVOLUTION, it would be 0657. This is always a GRAND time.
Revolting to some.

Simple - the suppressed lots for many years fought against the imperialism and the high handedness by the British. It can happen again but will be a revolt in a different fashion - you can call them as CIVIL WAR. Now moneyed people are suppressing the down trodden. The gap between the rich and poor is widening.

There were many social and religious reasons for the Revolt. The British started imposing their religion on the Indians by building churches and by forcing people to convert to Christianity. Further more, the Doctrine of Lapse, whereby adopted children were refused recognition and deprived of pension, instigated the political causes of the Revolt.

Hello,
Here is a different way to look at this. That era of history was called the Great Game and the Russian Empire was looking to get influence in India as well as sea ports. It is "speculated" that the Russians sent word to the Sepoys that the British were trying to grease the Enfield cartridges with pig fat to deliberately defile them and convert them to Christianity and that was a straw that broke the camel's back.
That said, the main cause was the General Service Enlistment Act of 1856 which required troops to serve overseas, itself a threat to caste, as well as involving voyages by sea where the risk of contamination in confined quarters from those of lower caste by shared messing and sanitary facilities was ever present.
Hind sight and some contemporary and revisionist historians say it was the first war of freedom; nationalism etc but I doubt any of those issues were really on the minds of the people involved.
