It would be foolish to live in any period of history other than our own context, really.

I mean think about it.

If you wetre a cro-magnon, there is no technology and you are hunted as often as you hunt.

Next age, and if your not still in the tribal ages (or Africa, Australia, N. America etc) then you are Greek and in constant war, or China and in constant war.

Next Age, and now it's be Roman or die. And if you're Roman you'll probably die young fighting or of disease/famine. Or maybe you'll just be mugged or killed for political reasons.

Next Age, and all of a sudden religion matters. If your Islamic, you're hounded by crusaders, if you're Catholic, you're sent off consistantly (eight times minimum, depending on if you are Pluralist or Traditionalist) into the deep recesses of Islam, and more than likely beat off. If you're Orthodox Christian, you're being raped by everyone, and in Asia you are dealing with the Three-Kingdoms crises -constant war. Not to mentioni developing Feudal Japan.

Next Age, and if your not being shot at by experimental guns on some Napoleanoic battlefield, you're instead in starvation, or slaving on the farms attempting to hide potatos. Of course, Plague is around too.

Next Age and Total war is into the mix. Sure, the world is developing, Superpowers emerging and all that -but you'll soon find that if you didn't choose the depression, then you chose war-time rations. Maybe you want to be in the army so you get normal ations only then you are sent off to fight in the war, and WWI wasn't exactly known for it's lack of casualties.

Next Age, and the whole world is paranoid at any minute that the skies will be filled with nukes care of the USA, or the USSR. Sure, you, being from the future know this wont happen -but given a second chance aswell maybe Kruschev wont back down in the Missile crises.

Then, we're back home. In our age. 1993 - Present. Everything seems pretty good as is. I opt to stick around in my own time.

Well, of course the only era that I would really want to live in is the present. We should learn to apreciate what we really have, compared with how brutal most of human history has been.

Buuut, if absolutely HAD to pick another time period, I would agree with your pick: The Pax Romana era, preferably during the reign of the Antonines. Let's see what they had back then

public housing
public hospitals
public food stores
public road network
public entertainment, including the colosseum and the baths
public water network
sewers
police force
fire brigade
religious toleration
relative economic liberty/light taxation
rule of law

Standards of living peaked during this time period, and wouldn't be surpassed until the modern era. The political strife that makes for exciting Hollyrome drama was kept at a minimum under such excellent rulers as Trajan or Hadrian. Tourism was common, even among the middle class; ancient Sparta was a favorite destination for tourists. Ice was a hot commodity during the summer months (yes, the Romans actually imported ice during the summer months.) Unemployment was only 10% (roughly the same as modern Europe's), life was good right up until the economic collapse of the empire during the third century.

Of all the time periods that have existed, the only one which would be even remotely tolerable by our modern standards would be the Pax Romana.

UPDATE: Yeah, for sure the Pax Romana. 1st century, while still seeing its fair-share of conflicts with the likes of Persia and Germanic tribes, was a time of relative peace for Rome. It'd be an ideal time to survey the culture, the politics, commerce. To do it without the constant threat of being killed would be preferable! lol

Oh I LOVE this question! I have several different time periods I'd go back to:

1) 14th and/or 18th century Scotland. I'm a huge Scottish buff and the conflicts between Scotland and England during these two periods were epic. The struggle to keep Scotland independent was, arguably, most ferociously fought during these two centuries.

2) I want to walk the earth during the time of dinosaurs, just to see how close Steven Spielberg's vision was!

3) 30 A.D. I'd love to meet Jesus face-to-face and see first-hand how his presence influenced people. Also, I'd want to witness up-close the rule of the Roman Empire.

4) 17th century Europe. Just because.

5) 18th century America. There'd be nothing more thrilling to me (except for #1 above) than to see the formation of this great country.

During The Lactic Period. A federal Gov. ruled (or tried to). No Nanny State - You worked to survive. Because of the very hot climate (up to 40 Summer and Winter) - everyone lived in TENTS. There is an interesting book on this period in history, entitled INTENSE LIVING . Can be ordered on line via AMAZON.
Enjoy the read - I know you will

The Renaissance! I think it'd be absolutely amazing to see such an impacting culture change. By living in a society based off of classic arts, scholarly ideas, and the "old ways", I feel I'd learn so much more that what's worth. I feel I belong there, because the people in that time period were so much more curious and enthusiastic about learning, I definitely feel that is where I fit in.

fairly some my answer would count on the social status that I gained as quickly as I went to any era. historical Greece would be positive as long as i became right into a citizen and not a slave. comparable with Russia for the duration of the reign of Peter the finished. i would not desire to stay everywhere in Europe after approximately 350 A.D. with the aid of non secular zealotry working rampant. So, i assume if I had to easily be a common guy, i'd take Beyonce and circulate to the super island of Hawaii till now Capt. prepare dinner confirmed up.

During the Napolionic era. 1790 - 1815

Europe in upheavel, great uniforms, regiments on both sides with huge honours and respect.

France actually looking like having a win when England takes it from them in the eleventh hour, just like in Rugby.

If ever there was a nation of trihards and wannabees you have to hand it to the French, even though they turned out to be surrender monkeys of the 3rd reich when push comes to shove.

And lets not mention the maginot line!!! One of Histories greatest blunders at its finest

I would live during like the 1920's because that was when things were starting to get invented and such.

OR

I would live in the 1950's, because it was just that decade where people got "Pinned" if they had a boyfriend or girlfriend, it was extreme to kiss out in public, dates consisted of the drive in movie and milk shakes. And I just think it would be fun. =)
