Deja vu is a perception illusion. The mechanism of the brain responsible for recording memory crosses wires with the part that recalls memory. So when you experience deja vu you are in essence remembering something as it happens.

Deja vu is a sense of having been there before. For example when someone gets lost while driving and arrives back at the same intersection something not carefully observed before seems somehow familiar. Perhaps the brain recorded an impression (without details) of the previously visited scene. Of course similar scenes that are not the same (a red room with a green carpet?) may generate a momentary sense of Deja vu. The brain stores a remarkable quantity of general information such that a trip in a car or a book read long ago still retains a clear enough impression to be recognized if revisited.

I dont really remember the details... but it seems there is some part of the brain that deals with familiarity... when this part of the brain gets excited without reason, you feel that the situation is a similar one..
of course.. thats not the whole answer.. why the part gets excieted is a question that nobody knows the answer to, i guess

I have read that the sense of smell is the biggest force in Deja vu.
