Flowcharts have been largely replaced by sequence diagrams from UML or equivalent modeling languages.

They're used at times because they are simple and easy to understand (in introductory programming classes, by people who don't know the more descriptive modeling languages).

I saw a flowchart in a specification just this past week -- the business analyst who wrote it probably didn't know UML.
