Look into Neil Gaiman or Terry Pratchett, both are are excellent fantasy and speculative fiction writers.
Also, The Dark Tower series, Stephen King.
The Last Unicorn, Peter S. Beagle.
Last but not least, Lord of the Rings series.

Anything by Sidney Sheldon and just finished Hannibal in the Beginning ( should have been written before Silence of the Lambs) but still a good read.
