Taco Bell got sued for using the idea without paying the two guys who came up with it. Rather then having to pay the guys more royalties, they got rid of the dog.

Taco Bell pulled the ad series with the chihuahua because a group of Hispanics felt it was derogatory. I do not know if a formal complaint was filed or if a lawsuit was threatened.

the fad, unlike the dog, died out. if you have seen treehouse of horror V you know what i mean. the dog (gidget) still acts and lives with his owners in La Grange, Texas
