Do mentally challenged people have an awareness of their condition. I've seen an on-line correspondence where someone had introduced them self as retarded. Do they know enough to make that claim?

I've always thought about that, I'm not really sure. I will be checking out your answers to this questions.
I would say that some do have that knowlege, I think it depends on how mentally challenged they are. But that is just my guess.

Yes, they are aware they are 'different' from other kids their age and this is usually because they notice differences in a mainstream class or if they have 'normal' siblings. I have assessed a few kids who turned out to have mild to moderate intellectual disability and according to parental reports, they knew they were different from other kids. I'm unsure though how many would say they are 'retarded'...I personally take offense to the term and prefer intellectually disabled

I'm certain from interactions over the years that they are aware that they are different, many even know their limitations, some just survive, It depends entirely on the degree of their disability

Sure, depending on how low the IQ is they feel different.
