We have a strange fascination with birthdates, anniversaries and the beginning of a new year. It's usually an occasion to celebrate, but in a society that places value on youth, success and accomplishment, it can also be a time of reflection and self-analysis. So what's going through your mind when you blow out the ever increasing numbers of candles on your birthday cake?

Well, I'm glad to still be here and around people I love. They're nice enough not to use the actual number of candles... or maybe they're just cheap bastids, but I love them anyway! I wish my birthday suit was as nice as it was 20 years ago, but we can't all have permanent press. Oh... I start practicing my new age a couple months beforehand now so I won't need to count on my fingers and look really stupid if someone asks my age. :-)

My b-day was on Monday. I turned 26. I've always hated birthday parties - I feel like an idiot being the focus of attention for no good reason. But this time my boyfriend took me to dinner at a nice restaurant and we had a relaxed, quiet time together. It was great.
