I remember as a kid in the 1960s and 1970s something along the lines of it being impolite to discuss sex, religion and politics, probably because these are issues that people get fired up about. I think this primary applies to keeping the peace at social gatherings. For example, it would be inappropriate to start a controversial conversation about politics at, say, someone's wedding or a workplace party.
I think this is more an etiquette issue than a taboo, and I believe it's a holdover from the good old days when people were reluctant to make waves. During the same time period, I remember people knowing about child abuse or domestic violence and feeling that it was not appropriate to make an issue of it. Thank God this is changing.

I've never heard of it being considered taboo to talk about politics in public...but if it is, it's most likely because certain political topics are very touchy and people can be easily offended. Not to mention some political debates can get extremely heated and possibly result in violence.
However, I agree with you. If people are more open as to their political standpoints, more people will become more educated on the things that really matter and there will be less ignorance.

The lines of between the two political paths in America are sharply divided between Socialist (liberals) and Capitalist (American traditionalist).
Socialist beliefs take on a religious fervor because they have no religion. (Opiate of the people . . . remember). Socialist do not believe in God, therefore, they focus their natural human tendencies toward religion, into the human political dynamic. Socialism IS their religion. To go against it is to cut at their very core. People defend this space aggressively and are able to HATE anyone who contradicts it.
Socialism is a SIN of Biblical proportions because it mandates "Take from those according to their ability and give to those according to their need." The "take" part is theft and that is a SIN. So, it is religious to Capitalist too.
Capitalism (now that we have outlawed slavery) does NOT "take" or "steal" from anyone. It buys that which it needs to produce. It buys labor and materials on an open market (or it should be) and produces something to help society. If it does not supply such a product people do not buy what they produce.
Socialist do not REALLY want to help society. They want to help themselves. Stalin lived a life of comfort while murdering 20 million of his own people. So, a "religion" which take God out of the mix is demonic and full of murder.

because people get angry and emotional when they defend their political views. It's taboo to agrue, since politics creates arguements, it's taboo to talk about it.
Or maybe that's what the government wants, a people who keep silent so that they can remain powerful.

Don't pi*s in the hot tub. Don't remark on the similarity between the taste of sushi and your hosts wife, don't ask for a fork, don't pick your nose in public, don't stay sober when all your work colleagues are falling around pretending to be drunk, don't get drunk when all your work colleagues are falling around pretending to be drunk, don't get into pis*ing matches with your hosts daughters, don't mention 'the war', don't avoid mentioning 'the war',
