If an athlete, which is a paid entertainer, makes 50 million in a country that speaks a language that is foreign to him/her, should he/she try to speak that language? Or at least enough to be able to thank the fans so they can understand? This does not apply to the athletes "off the boat", just the ones who have played there for a minimum of 4 years and make ridiculous salaries.

Of course he SHOULD. He (or any foreign athlete) will eventually get out the baseball field and go to a restaurant, or the shopping center and will need to speak in the home country's language, in this case english.

BUT it depends in the person's personality and desire to enrich himself and live a better life. If you are not hungry to learn and be somebody smarter, it won't happen.
Obviously, many athletes are more than satisfy with their luxuries and life styles, and will not do anything productive (which means put some effort on it) if they do not need to or are not required to do.

I was QUITE offended when David Ortiz's daughter was interviewed in the all-stars game like 3 years ago, and she did NOT know any word in english.... And i am not blaming her, BUT HER PARENTS!!! she lives in USA.. and will live all her life.. then.. SPEAK ENGLISH.

I am latin ,and I am offended. no kidding.

Even.... before going to france or russia... i learned some of their basic words and sentences to not going thru any trouble of miscommunication.
