Musharraf was never popular in his country. He overthrew a democratically-elected leader, who was accused of a questionable corruption charge, in a bloodless coup . Islamist militancy has been on the rise and is only hampering his efforts to fight terrorist entities in his land. Imposing martial law will only ensure that Musharraf remains in power, not to secure law and order.

Musharraf is in need of emergency and martial law. He has to postpone elections indefinitely. He has to prove to US administration that he is a great fighter of terrorism. He has to prevent Benazir Bhutto from returning to Pakistan. Since 1947 when Pakistan became independent, almost all rulers have been American puppets.

Well what other type of law does he have after the Supreme court rejected his orders?

This goes back.. but Musharraf ain't no American Puppet - he got his presidency fair and square in the Coupe that ousted the last Pakistani president .... when India kicked Pakistani butts at the frontier during the India-Pakistan war. (not right away though....)

but thing being it is really tense in Pakistan with the Red Mosque issue - and talk of the former president and others being unexiled etc.. as well as a potentially non winning election coming up a war right next door in Afghanistan etc..

it's undoubtedly pretty tense in Pakistan right now. The loss of the Supreme court authority weakens him that much more.

I think he still has a lot of support but - the Afghanistan thing has undoubtedly caused a militant back lash - and he appears to be catering to the US when many of his supporters likely don't.
