the 2 is for second gear used for starting out in slippery conditions like snow. L is for low gear or first gear when you dont want the car to shift like towing or going up hills. Dont drive normally and expect normal shifting from your car with these gears. 2 only uses second gear or first and second depending on the car manufacturer.

dizzy has it right
the L is for staying in 1st gear (Low gear) this is only for if your having trouble either climbing a hill or starting to tow something.
the 2 is for second gear, this is used to stay in 2nd gear. some cars it goes 1st the 2nd but other cars it just goes into second. where this is helpful is that when it rains or snows, if you have a problem sliding when you first start moving then you can put it in 2nd and this will start with less power so you don't slide. this is manely helpful in rear wheel drive vehicles. some cars now actually have a button for this. my sister has a 99' camaro and it has a button on the dash for SGS which stands for Second Gear Start.

L stands for low, which is basically a forced first gear, and the 2 is for second gear. In an automatic, a car changes gears when the RPM/speed reaches a certain level (depends on the car what triggers the shift). These are towing and climbing gears, and are honestly rarely ever used.

Drive uses all the forward gears in the transmission;
In 2 it uses only the first 2 gears, shifts from 1 (Low) to 2, doesn't shift into High, or 3;
In L it stays in Low (1st) gear.
It's for crawling uphill, or for carrying or hauling a heavy load.
"Boy Racers" like to use it to pretend they have a "real" transmission, but that's childish and stupid.
