I'm co-writing a short film, and we will be shooting soon, and we need a classical piece to be played in the background throughout. Any suggestions for intense, suspenseful pieces? It doesn't have to be Mozart, or Beethoven, something very new and modern even. Just any suggestions at all. Share as many as you know just so we have lots of options. Thanks! :)

If you want something modern, Georgy Ligeti wrote some pretty intense stuff. The "Lux Eterna" which you can find on the 2001 Space Odyssy sound track is an erie piece. Similar is "Ramifications" for strings -- I think there is a youtube video of that.

If you want something a little more "accessible" you can try Barber's Essay for Orchestra #2. Or perhaps Shotakovich Symphony #5, 3rd movement.

Also the 1st movement to Bartok's "Music for Strings Percussion and Celest."

Good Luck!

New and modern might involve a living composer or one whose music is still copyright. So you need a composer dead at least 70 years. Depending on the nature of the film, try Bruckner 9th symphony. Problem may be that the music will overpower the cinematic effort.

Shostakovich's Symphony No. 10 is very good. I am not positive what movement. I believe I am thinking of the 4th or the 1st. It starts with very heavy, powerful, strings and then the oboe comes in kinda wimpy but it gets much more stong!
-hope it helps!
