Mushrooms are are a decaying fungus, most of them belong to the Basidiomycetes order.Oftentimes what you see above the soil surface is the basidiocarp- the reproductive structure. With that said you must have some type of decaying material on site. Many times they appear when you have a new lawn , the soil amendment is highlky organic , in this case it is not harmful. Sometimes mushrooms appear where a tree was removed and the roots or other material are breaking down, agian this type of fungus is not harmful and will soon go away. This heterotrophs are part of the decaying cycle.

Mushrooms in the lawn may be unsightly but they are not harmful. They are the reproductive organs of various fungi that feed on organic materials in the soil and appear only when conditions are right. There is no need to treat the lawn for mushrooms. Simply mow them off.

Treat them nicely.
It depends on what kind. There are sprays that will usually kill them off (like Copper sulfate). But this may not be a good thing to do. Fungi usuall have a relationship with the plants they live under. Mycorhysal. They help the plants gather nutrients and break down the organic matter in the soil.
Unless you know the 'shrooms are poisonous, FEW are, then just enjoy. They won't always be there.
