some ppl really do not consider children protection at all...It's a shame there's no particular section for kids while some ppl keep asking stupid questions and using disturbing avatars...isn't it??
of course Y/A team suspend their accounts but not before some of these poor kids read those questions and answers.

thanxs for your answers :)

Since I have started in Y!A, I have never seen this as a place for kids. It was bad going to a lot worse. A section for kids will change nothing since kids are lying about their ages just to be on here.
Suspending accounts does nothing, they will be back in ten minutes to start over.
Parents are going to be the only ones able to protect their kids by not allowing them in sites like this. That is what it has come down to.

The idea that there should be separate sites for younger uses is a fine one, however, as with all things on the net its open to anyone, and there is really no way YA could check age. People lie!, goodness I expect there are all sorts of fibs being told all the time. The only people who can police the users of the internet are the users themselves and of course the parents. But this is a much less harmful site for children to use than many! Although I'm not sure that they should allow the IM facility as that's a way that a much more direct approach can be made.

elflaeda did you say 'lynch'? That is far more harmful that a fleeting pornographic image. This is the eternal paradox, we protect our children from sex but push violence, ignorance and a lack of acceptance.
In that respect, the internet isn't a safe place, full stop. I agree with the prospect of streaming the site by age, but those who want to flout the boundaries will anyway. In fact, you'd make it easier for those who specifically target children.
I'd imagine Y!A has evolved pretty far from what yahoo initially set it out to be. If 57 people didn't jump on every dumbass that posts a stupid question, maybe they'd get bored and go elsewhere?

There are times even Y!A take things for granted. The rules and regulations are there, but the average age group to be in the Y!A community is not known. To date, Y!A may have taken the initiatives to delete or suspend accounts, but not enough to ensure that Y!A is an unsafe place.

On the other hand, parental guidances are also important in their part to check whatever websites / forums your children may be seeing. Windows XP parental control can actually let you able / disable the website your children visiting.

Cheers :)

There should be seperate Yahoo answers for age groups 13-15, 16-18, 18-21 and the rest of us!
It is up to the parents of the younger crowd to monitor what they are seeing and doing, but the avatars of sexually explicit nature, the questions and the like are just wrong for younger participants. And in the real world, their just isn't enough guidance for the younger audience.
I believe in the freedom of speech and expression of ideas and beliefs, but sometimes it takes an adult maturity to filter out without condemning those that do not interest you or could be harmful to your developement.

I posted this suggestion in the Forum once. I had a member of the Yahoo! staff get in touch and say that only children over the age of thirteen are allowed on here.

The problem is, if you change your birthdate, you could be 8yrs old and on here! On one girl's profile, she clearly says she is 11yrs old, which town she lives in, which school she goes to...it's dangerous and Yahoo! should do something about it.

This is why the idea of age grouping has been throw around here.
There should be a teen section like on other Q&A sites.

I've reported people for what I considered to be child protection issues.

As long as we remember that children as young as ten may be here and curb our language/expressions/avatars appropriately and if we lynch anyone we we using abusive language or trying to IM (and therefore possibly set up a meeting) someone we suspect to be under age. We can be seen as a responsible site.

Yes. Children should not be here. But then neither should some of the parents. It is amazing who can get away with what here. I think there is a conspiracy going on.
