Just so you know, North America and South America are considered separate continents. I don't know where you learned about continents, but there are seven, if you have a source for that, please share.
However, I will give you this. I looked this up and, in some schools, students are taught that there is one America. Don't get a big head though, just because this is what you were taught does not mean everyone else was taught the same thing. In elementary school and beyond, I was taught that there are seven.

Technically...Asia, Africa, and Europe are all connected, so that is one continent. The Americas are connected, thats two, then Antarctica, thats three, and you really do need to consider Australia a continent because those islands of Oceania are so far separated by water that there is no way you can call them a continent or even part of one. Thus, only four continents.

It depends upon how you define "continent". If you define it strictly as a tectonic plate with a major land mass above the ocean's surface, there are actually 8: North American plate South American plate African plate Eurasian plate Indian plate Australian plate Antarctic plate By this definition, part of eastern Russia is in North America cause its part of that plate. However, the definition of "continent" has been politically influenced a bit. Europe and Asian are commonly referred to as two separate continents and the Indian plate gets lumped in with Asia. Politically speaking there are 7: North America South America Africa Eurpoe Asia Australia Antarctica. Geologists will say there are more, politicians will say there are 7. You pick.

It depends where you went to school. Both models are widely accepted.
The 7-continent model is usually taught in Western Europe, Northern Europe, Central Europe, China and most English-speaking countries. The 6-continent combined-Eurasia model is preferred by the geographic community, Russia, Eastern Europe, and Japan. The 6-continent combined-America model is taught in Latin America, the Iberian Peninsula, Italy, Iran and some other parts of Europe; this model may be taught to include only the 5 inhabited continents (excluding Antarctica).

To be completely honest with you, there are 7 continents:
1-Austrailia
2-Africa
3-North America
4-South America
5-Antarctica
6-Europe
7-Asia
There are many misconceptions that Europe and Asia are the same continent. Although the two are not separated by an ocean, they are two separate continents.

You say potato, I say potato.
Why are you so grumpy about people counting North and South America as two different continents?
Why don't you consider Europe and Asia one continent, as they have a much larger area of land connecting them than N and S America?

Are you a scientist?
What makes YOUR definition the CORRECT definition?
The idea of 7 continents is based on tetonic plates. That sounds like good science to me.
Your definition is common in Latin America.
You know, Latin America, a place that has produced SO MUCH sound scientific knowledge.
