Its not but it has certainly given Osama Bin Laden plenty of time to regroup with lots of new recruits signed up in Iraq.

I know this is going to sound simplistic but our going to war in Iraq, which by the way was something Bush and his pals planned on doing long before 9/11 has nothing to do with making us safe from terrorists. It has to do with making Iraqi oil safe for the plundering oil companies so they can reap even greater profits than they already do. How can destroying a country thereby causing a catastrophic situation of over 2 million Iraqi refugees have anything to do with defending America.

Addition: AJ has it right.

War in Iraq was never about terrorism. Terrorism was simply a lame excuse that could be easily fed to the public like hay to a bunch of docile cows.

To find the real reason, you need to follow the money. Where did almost a trillion dollars go? Military complex, various subcontractors, Halliburton, oil industry, etc, etc. Never mind that most of it was actually wasted, even a portion of that amount is a big chunk of change.

The war started something like this: a bunch of special interest group leaders got together and decided that a war would be really cool for the bottom line. In order to do that thay put a president in power who is loyal to them and nobody else. Lost young American lifes and wasted resources? Who cares? Screw all those loosers! Even if the whole country goes to hell, there are other countries to go to on their private jets.

It is causing more problems, from our own economic woes to displacing 4 million Iraqi's.It's all bad. These people like Le Ann and Mayflower need to get a grip and get back to reality like we haven't lost enough of our liberties already. The tyrants they speak of are our congress and this administration.By the way Iraq's prime minister doesn't want us there anyway.Immediate removal of our forces is what he said. It's also a great idea to be borrowing 60 million a day from CHINA to finance it.Where do they grow you people? Please let us know so we can destroy the crops.By the way if Bush and this congress are so worried about terrorism WHY AREN'T OUR BORDERS AND PORTS SECURED?I think securing our own country should come before securing a foreign country no matter what excuse our great neocon administration is trying to give us.It's B.S.

It isn't, alqeada declared war on us not Iraq. I could care less about Iraq's problems with Saddam, it was their problems, our problem is a vocal and determined enemy killed our citizens on our soil in a horrific way after they told us they were going to do it. osama stated he did not think we would go after him in Afghanistan against the Taliban, we would run like we did in Somalia. We didn't, we destroyed the Taliban and put alqueda on the run and froze their money, we were doing a good job with the assistance of the free world. You tell me why we went to Iraq. we should have not played politics with Pakistan. killed osama while we had him trapped , we also should have sealed our borders and not apologize or played politics with our airline screening process. Until a white jew, Christian, atheist or 85 year old woman declares war on this country, I am not going to be sorry for being suspicious of Mr Arab Islamabad at a airport. That's the reality of war. Now alqeada is gaining strength and there are cells in the U.S. the Taliban became more bold and recently kidnapped Korean missionaries.

When I read through the answers that have been provided by, unfotunately a majority of these ppl, the saying "ignorance is bliss" comes to mind. As a soldier who fought in Iraq, I completely disagree with the reason for being over there. The only logical reaction for 9/11 would be to go for the nation in which the leader resided, which was afghanistan, which we did. and where to next, where the leader got his funds, which sorry to inform you ppl, was not iraq. his family was from saudi arabia, it doesnt take a genius to figure that out. majority of the ppl on the planes were saudi. then what reasons did bush give us to begin with, not the one he gives us now. he flipped as much as kerry did. don't get me wrong, i didnt like my choices between bush and kerry, and unfortunately we will probably have a repeat of horrid candidates come the 2008 election. but we are feeding the hatred, we need to destroy them, throw down the geneva convention, since the enemy doesnt follow it, and annihilate the enemy, let them see what force that they are truly facing. i might not agree with the war or the president, but we are there, we need to put fear in their eyes. if anyone is truly interested, do a search on black jack pershing in the phillipines and what he did to the muslims. it might just be a myth, but its a damn good one. i dont hate muslims, just the ones that i fought in iraq that would take our kindness and turn it into weakness.

Role play: You're a terrorist (hypothetically *I hope*) you hate America. You can fly to the US and attack there, and it MIGHT work, it might not. Or you can hitch a ride one or two countries over and hit troops or civilians no problem. Which would be more easier?
Sad truth, but yes it is a "fight them over there" situation. Besides, Bush must be doing something right, have you seen any attacks? Thats a serious question. And the answer is no. Besides, focusing all troops in Afghanistan? Theres probably a reason behind this (some we SHOULDNT know and some we wouldn't understand).

I have to answer because there is a lot of stupidity on this site.
First to those that say the war has killed more than 911. True. Over 3000 ppl were killed in one day, simply by showing up to work. We have lost 3000 in the war spanning several years killing many more bad guys that want to NOT hurt you, but KILL you, your kids, parents, gradparents, simply because we live in the USA.
I am glad these ppl weren't around to protest the Revolutionary War. We might still be hailing the Queen! Would those counting #'s say that the Civil War should not have been faught?

"The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is its natural manure."
--Thomas Jefferson

Us going to Iraq and fight fundamental Islamist extremist is defending America. Let me brk this down. In the Middle East, the Bad guys have the guns & the power. The everyday average citizen has nothing. They are subjected to the will of the tyrants. Now if these tyrants are able to gain total control of the Middle Eastern region they will eventually come and knock down the US door. So stopping now is in America's best interest.

It is important to install a democray in Iraq for two reasons.
1. Democracy creates an over all better living environment. The citizens of neighboring countries will damand the same.

"Liberty, not communism, is the most contagious force in the world. "
--Earl Warren (in this case we are not fighting communism, but the idea is the same)

2. Through out the course of history no two democratic COUNTRIES have ever gone to war against each other.

There are two reasons why a country will go to war. One is for tangable gain. Which we don't want their land~so that's not it. The other reason is for ideology. We are fighting for the preservation of our freedom & to spread that to those who have been suppressed their entire life.

To those that want to say the war is all about oil. This is what I have to say. DUH! Aside from air & water Americans are most dependent on fossil fuel. The only way a country can bring this country to our knees is to cripple us economically. We get most of our oil from Chavez...who basically hates us also. If they decided to up the price of oil as to where it can actually collapse our economy...where do YOU think we will be? Praising Allah because we would be overran by bad Muslim fanaticals. So by securing another stepping stone to the Mid.East we are securing our economic survival & any one who thinks America is not going to protect her interest is CRAZY!

And when it's time to fight Iran, Iraq will be an alli.

I hope this gives you a persective.

It's really self evident. Our policies of diplomacy, appeasement and no effective response to the terrorists only resulted in more terrorism and death - and finally culminated in the events of 9/11.
This is partly due to the fact that there is no single country, no organized army and no actual front to this war - and that certainly makes it very difficult to respond to their tactics of indiscriminate slaughter of thousands of innocent people.
But we must confront this enemy - we must eliminate this ideology of hatred and domination - and, whether we agree or not, Iraq has become the center of our war on terror.
Our policy of military action has sent a clear message to the terrorists - they now know that they cannot continue their crusade of death with impunity, there will be serious consequences. And, again, agree or not, it is certainly a valid talking point to say that it is far better to bring the war to them then to revert back to our policies of inaction and simply wait for the next attack. It is impossible to terror-proof our country against the tactics used by these militants - and if we leave them to train and reorganize, the steps we will have to take to try and prevent another attack will inevitably lead to our rights and personal freedoms being intruded upon like never before.

Iraq WAS a state sponsor of terror. Saddam used to help fund suicide bombers in Israel killing Jews and their children.

The Iraq war got rid of the tyranical regime and replaced it with a democracy the people have a shot at succeeding with.

If we cut and run before their security forces can handle all the problems, we will be handing the country to Al Queda and/or Iran who are determined to strike in the US and europe. Would it be smart to hand your enemies the middle easts 2nd largest oil fields?

"it is causing more problems than it is solving"

WHAT???

More terrorist attacks occurred on Clinton's watch, both inside and outside of U.S. borders, than during any other presidential administration in U.S. history.

9/11 was planned on Clinton's watch, carried out during Bush's. There have been zero attacks here in the subsequent 6 years since Bush took the fight to the terrorists.

Going from the most attacks to none is a problem? On what planet?
