Can you help me name this movie please??

Question

From memory, I saw it around 2000-2001 and it was about a guy on some sort of space ship, he had a couple of alien friends (puppets) and they did something wrong so their punishment was they had to sit in a cinema and watch old movies. Alot of the movie was looking from the cinema down at the screen with the silhouette of the 3 characters sitting in front watching the movie. The characters also do their own commentary of the movie they are forced to watch, which is quite funny. They were speaking English in the movie but I can't remember if there were any subtitles. I would love to find this movie so if anyone out there can remember the name it would be much appreciated!!

Umm...aren't you talking about the long-running TV series "Mystery Science Theatre 3000"?

Edited to add: There was a theatrical release where the crew of the Satellite of Love hit the big screen to mock "This Island Earth".

Yeah, it's Mystery Science Theater 3000.. the movie version was okay, but the series was awesome..
