Nothing bad will happen if the name on the check matches at least the last name or address of the person on the bank account. You never have to sign a check if it is for deposit only. If it is a check made out to some unknown person, not on the account, they bank will not deposit it but return it to the name and address on the check.

I never sign checks to put in the ATM they deposit fine without. I asked once when my husband has surgery on his right hand and they said no problem so I haven't signed one in 25 years.

its okay, the ammount gets deposited as it would have had you not signed.
however if your depositing it within the bank, chances are you will need to sign it.
