For this one I have to start from the beginning of the rise of Rome, only the inhabitants of this city, founded in 753 BC according to tradition, were Roman citizens and were just called ROMANS. The other people who lived in Italy, but not in Rome, were NOT called Italians in general, but they were Latins, Etruscans, Volscans, Samnites, Oscans, Iapygians, Gauls, Veneti, Ligurians, Umbrians, Apuli, Calabri, Lucani, Sardes, Sicanians...
In short each people retained its original name, though almost all of them were Indo-Europeans having the same origin and speaking cognate languages.
Only later in 90 BC, when Rome grew in power and conquered the rest of the Italy, the Roman citizenship was extended to all Italy, though with some limitations.
It was then that the word “ITALI”(Latin for ‘ITALIANS') was first used and spread from South to North of the Italian peninsula.About how they look like... well gladiators with big noses. LOL The Roman nose is very typical and look like the beak of an eagle.

Whilst you were wandering about the Romans what were they doing? Where they standing talking, singing, telling jokes?

Seriously though they couldn't have been Italian as that term only came about after Garibaldi won the independence of the country back in the 19th Century.

They were originally from Rome (hence the name) & very probably would have been olive skinned with mediterranean features, however, once they expanded their empire & more races came under their control & became "Romanised" they probably became lighter skinned etc.

The Roman Empire stretched from Britain to Morocco to Libya to Turkey. So at the height of empire they could look like anyone from North Africa to Central Asia.

However, Romans from the city of Rome looked pretty much as "native" Romans look today!

Italy wasn't a unified entity until the 19th century, so strictly speaking they weren't "Italian".

I`ve never "wandered" about Romans ,I used to "wonder" sometimes but then I learnt to read and write.
They were Italian since Rome IS in Italy.
If you read the Aeneid you`ll find ONE explanation of their origin which tells of the first "Romans" being survivors of the siege of Troy (in what is now Turkey). They settled in Italy and interbred with the wild tribes living there ,eventually forming what became Rome.
I find this more believable than the Romulus/Remus legend LOL

"Wandering" about the Romans means you are walking around them. I think you are Wondering about the Romans. They originated in Italy when they seized power from the Etruscans. They had all complexions. After Rome became an empire persons not born in Rome could become Roman citizens, based upon a variety of things, like serving in the army; so there is a difference between born Romans and people who achieved citizenship. As their empire spread the gene pool broadened and as a result many more appearances relating to skin color and hair color, etc. were evident in Romans.

Rome was gigantic! The culture was quite eclectic--there were lots of different ethnic groups. Anyone could apply to become a Roman citizen.
