If the machines are reasonably modern then you can just plug each end of the LAN cable into each of the machine's ethernet ports. Each port has a green light and an orange light, if both green lights turn on then it's working. If not, then it means the cards are old and you'll have to use a crossover ethernet cable instead, which you can pick up from your local computer store.
Once you've got a proper connection follow the usual steps for setting up a network. Good luck!

The time spent making your own cross over cable might be better spent in just buying one or a hub.
Yes, it can be done. But why do you want to do it?
You could throw two wireless cards on them and make an ad-hoc network as well.
If you want to move some files, you can use sneaker net with a USB dongle. Or just swap the hard drive from one into the other.
So.... why?

Yes you can. You need a crossover cable for that. Straight over cable doesn't work in this scenario.

All good answers but after you connect your cable you need to go into Control Panel, Network Connections, setup new connection. When the wizard starts select Advanced Connetion and follow the prompts.

You want to use a crossover cable, not an ethernet cable. They have the same connector but are different cables. Radioshack, computer stores carry them.

Use a crossover cable. To tell if it is a cross, look at the cable with the metal contacts facing you. The wire configuration should be white orange, orange, white green, blue, white blue, green, white brown, brown. The other end is white green, green, white orange, blue, white blue, orange, white brown, brown.
That's a cross.
