Actually castor oil is an old age laxitive. During pregnancy stool softners are advised not castor oil because castor oil causes severe diarrhea and if a patient with cervical incompetence is to use castor oil it may precipitate labor. The mechanism is it raises the pressure in your abdomen so in a term mother it might just start labor...... Theres nothing else to castor oil except a thick viscous oil and the plant is very poisonous...

DON'T DO IT!
My sister made me drink a whole bottle mixed with orange and pineapple juice when I was a couple of days overdue with my first son. All it did was make me violently ill...vomiting AND diarrhea for almost 2 days. When I finally had my son naturally 8 days later....he had pooed inside me and the doctors said that the castor oil had put him inot distress and that is why he had done this. Apparently it can make them very ill if they swallow their poo so I was very lucky he hadn't!
Apparently it is supposed to work by making your bowel spasm...and boy does it spasm!...which is supposed to stimulate your uterus into contracting. I firmly believe that the only time it seems castor oil 'works' is if you are about to go into labour anyway. Then it is all a big coincidence! And who wants to deal with diarrhea and bowel spasms when your are in labour? Labour pains are bad enough and I never want to squirt my doctor or anyone else with diarrhea when I am giving birth!!!!!
To this day, (13 years later), I can still remember the taste of the castor oil and can't wear a certain tropical flavour lip balm as it is EXACTLY the taste of the concoction my sister made me drink!
I say again....DON'T DO IT!!!

Castor oil: Castor oil is a strong laxative, and stimulating your bowels may cause some contractions, but no good studies have proven it consistently effective, and you're likely to find the effect on your gut very unpleasant

Castor Oil gives you diarhea and this irrates your bowel (obviously) which in turn can stimulate pelvis and bring on labour. I would rather wait and see then get diarhea! Try having sex instead, this is proven to work in many medical books and nipple stimulation is also worth a try. Both are so much more fun!

NO this is an old wives tale. Castor oil is a potent laxative that will cause diarrhea and may cause the fetus to have a bowel movement that will contaminate the amniotic fluid.

Oh honey, I'm pretty sure that is an old wifes tale. For heavens sake, please don't try it!!
I can tell you what worked twice for me to help induce labor, and you may laugh, lol...but it worked for me.
I re arranged furniture!
Please don't take something as harsh as castor oil...I only know about that lubing the bowels, errrrr, wrong area!!
Good luck when your time does come!

I took some with my first pregnancy and went into labor 48 hours later. I dunno if it was a quincidence or what not but take it from me. THAT STUFF IS NASTY. it taste like that pop sicle stick that the dr sticks in your mouth at the office. But only its liquid. Its so nasty. My best advice is to hang in there, I'm sure if your thinking of labor tactics your towards the end and it shouldn't be much longer anyway and why make your poor self taste that nasty stuff.

Wellll I tried it, and it didnt work for me. It does work for some people though, I watched a baby story on TLC and the dr had the woman take it and she went into labor. But as for me all it did was give me diarreah and made my hemorrhoids come back! Im still pregnant! But I did lose my mucous plug!!!
