No they dont have to be. Take Pennington, he was named the comeback player of the year, which he had been through lots during his career with injuries and 2 rotator cuff surgeries. 1 rotator cuff injury is enough to send him home with retirement but Pennington came back with 2. Someone for example who has been traded to 3 teams in 4 years and had a rough year before with drugs or something, comes back the next season and earns a trip to the pro bowl and helps out around the nation with kids and stuff... they also could earn comeback player of the year.

Let's assume Pac-Man or Michael Vick are aquitted and then come back to have a monster season. Would they win the award or are they so hated now that it would be impossible?

if a great player was injured and then he came back playing greatly, then that would not be considered comeback player of the year.. someone has to play mediocrely or sub-par one year and then come next year and have a GREAT impact on his team to be considered for the award.. for instance, if joey harrington gets the falcons to the playoffs, he will win that award..

no they could have been really bad or things like that also if vick came back and dominated he would be a comeback player
