Yes... There is a self that governs our body... the one we call our soul atman within! Realizing our real self is the goal of every living being! The form of a human being... the highest manifest stage in the cosmic life cycle... it is only as a human being one realizes the real self within us.
Never as an insect, plant or an animal... can one realize the real self!

Gaining enlightenment (kaivalya jnana) and finally salvation (moksha) is the real crux of life. Enlightenment can only be gained by realizing our true inner self... our soul the atman within! Realizing self is the ultimate goal of every spiritual seeker... the end goal of life! Mahavira... the 24th Tirthankara of Jainism rightly said, "Before preaching anything we must become a true Jina"!

And what is a Jina? Jina is one who realizes the reality of cosmic life... one who peeps beyond the ephemeral! One who finally transcends mortal life and becomes one with God Almighty. Regaining original pristine pure form by realizing that it is our soul atman within that is the controller of the body and not vice versa is becoming a true Jina!

The moment human beings realize that the real controller of us is our soul atman within... it is all over for the soul atman! One finally realizes the absolute truth of life... even the body is an outer covering... a garment for the soul atman within! This truth dawns upon one the moment one gains enlightenment and salvation... never before!

The doctrine of self is not a philosophy... it is in fact the real truth of mankind! Human beings and all living beings exist for our self is there... our soul the atman within! Bhagavad Gita... the most sacred scripture of Hinduism on Mother Earth states... the goal of every soul atman is gaining liberation from the cycle of birth and death forever!

The mortal world was meant to eradicate the impurities within every soul atman. Through the complex process of karma... every soul atman manifests body after another until it reaches the last leg of cosmic life... the 8.4 millionth manifestation! It is at this stage a human being ultimately realizes true self and reaches the kingdom of God (aka Baikuntha in Hinduism). More on Inner Self - http://www.godrealized.com/inner_self.html

Yes there is a true "self" which we call 'soul'. It is nothing but energy. This energy takes form of human body to accomplish that tasks as a human. It takes the form of any other living being when it has to. Ultimately the body in which it is is not reality but the energy is. This energy is the true "self".
As we know "Energy can neither be created not destroyed" this energy is also eternal, undying. Hence is the 'self'.

Sure. It's a set of learned behaviors and attitudes that help you cope with the world when you're young. Sort of like training wheels. Zen Buddhism and bits of other religions aim at teaching you to get along in the world without being "self" centered, to keep your balance without the training wheels.

You already have the answer. Now, discovering that, is the purpose of life. You "don't know what you don't know." When you become conscious of what you didn't know, you then, "know what you don't know."

But the way, the end of the book is already written, You have an eternity of discover that you have, and have always had the answer to the question: "Is there a self?"
