The "clicking" you hear is the starter solenid. That is a classic sound for a dead battery. However, that doesn`t mean your battery is no good. You need to check battery cables and alternator also. If there is an auto zone store in your area, get a boost and go there.......they will check it for you for free. If there is none, then try this. Clean your battery posts and cable connectors. Re-connect them and get someone to give you a jump. While the engine is running, remove the positive cable from the battery (It won`t shock you, but, Don`t let it touch anything else). If the engine dies, you have a problem in your charging system. If the engine keeps running, your battery needs replacing. It is really very simple, but you might want to get some guy to help.

The problem may not be the starter, or the battery, it could be the charging system, meaning the alternator or components. I would suggest, charging the battery with a charger at your home, and driving down to the local auto parts store, where most will free of charge check your battery, looking for a sale of course, and they would tell you if that were the problem. I doubt it is the starter, most likely;y the alternator or the battery. Sid M

Try the easy stuff first. Clean your battery post and cables. You can drive all day and the battery won't charge with corroded post or cables. Have the battery checked. Could be a bad battery, dead cell etc. My guess is the alternater is good because you have been running on it not the battery. Last resort would be the starter solenoid.

Battery depleting sign is that when you start the engine the click click sound appears(tick tick) if self is too long then battery is weak and after some days battery loose its power(current) volatge may be 12.6 but it does not mean battery is in good health.Lights also lit fan running but battery needs heavy volatge and current for engine rotation/spark.1.check the load of battery 2.Voltage 3.cables connections 4.Fuse for starting/self system 5. Spark plugs leads and coils to be checked also If all appears ok take a jump leads to start or push start via if engine starts then battery has been dead.we some time confused that Engine started and battery charged little but again problem remain same so then in the End battery has been dead.Replace the battery as soon as other wise weak battery may be cause of generator weakness. Thanks

RE:
how do you know if your car's problem is the battery or starter?
I have a 96 toyota corrolla, last week the car would start but it sounded alot "slower" whenever i cranked it. It did this the whole week sometimes it started right up without the hesitation but it never not started when i turned the key. Tonight I went outside and it had the hesitation...

Take the battery to sears or some other place like pet boy they will test it for you. Did you try and jump start the car? If you can jump it then it dies soon after it is probably the starter. If it runs fine for 20 minutes or so then doesn't start again after you kill the engine its probably the battery.

lights and interior electronics are not indications that your battery is fine. If I were you, I'd switch out batteries with someone and see if it fixes the problem.
Are the lights dim even after the car has started up? If so, than that could be a different problem other than ur battery.

I'm no mechanic, but it could be the battery being a little low. If it was the starter, the engine wouldn't have even turned.

I'm a woman too! Try cleaning your battery cables and make sure that the connection is strong. It sounds like it is your battery.

Get the battery tested first. Then have the starter, cables, and alternator test. They all work together.
