For best performance get the HDD with NCQ and 8mb or higher cache. 2 -3 partitions would be just right for that size. And after a fresh OS installation, be sure to load all drivers first before you load your softwares.

I would make the older one a slave to the newer one for one thing (unless its having reliability problems)

I would also recommend just making one partition.
Some people prefer two partitions so you can isolate the OS, but in reality this makes seek times slower and an in place installation of the OS works just as well on a single partition drive. If you have two partitions and reformat just one partition you lose all the registry anyway and programs in the other partition wont work.

Just make 1 partition, backup files to the old hard driver occasionally.

i suggest you divide your hard disk into four partitions.
(1) System (OS) & Other Important Stuff (Anti-virus & some softwares which u feel r important);
(2) Games;
(3) Music & Videos;
($) Softwares.

Trust me thats the best solution. Its helps in solving the problem of 'complicated mess'!

if its your primary drive, try this combo ~ C 35-45gb,D 115-125gb,E 5gb
use c as your primary drive where the os and applications get installed to ( you can also use d for the applications and leave os side alone if you like)
right click my computer, properties, advanced,enviromental variables get set here (tempfile set to D), Set your virtual ram while your there to the E partition to avoid having your vram with your os/storage data.
this is really all for personal taste and organizational needs.
Good Luck
