Within the past year I've become totally addicted to SVU. One thing I don't understand. In the recent episodes, Stabler and Benson have seperated as partners. I read something somewhere that Elliot was an abusive father- is this true? Are he and family seperated for some reason?? And why are Stabler and Benson no longer partners??
Please answer- I'm so confused!

Elliot has NEVER been an abusive father...just a workaholic father. X_X And in the last season, he got Kathy (his wife, ex-wife, whatever status, I don't remember to be honest) pregnant again--so I think that he'll be getting back with his family very soon.
And he and Olivia are on and off at the moment, because Olivia doesn't like how Elliot works and Elliot doesn't like how soft Olivia is. They've worked together for eight years, which is six years more than a regular detective in the Special Victims Unit, so *I* personally believe that the stress is getting to them. Working so long has twisted them in ways they never thought would happen...

I think you miss read or they wrote what happened wrong.
Elliot was the one who was abused. By his father, he admits this to Dr. Hendrix during a case he was investigating involving an old partner of his. If there's one thing you learn about Elliot Stabler is that he loves his family and does what ever it takes to shield them from the horrors of his job.
In season 6 the squad found out Elliot and Kathy (his wife) had separated. Why you ask? Communication problems (in order to shield his family from the horrors of his worklife he doesn't talk about it with them), and also the fact that he's hardly at home. His work takes up most of his time. The problems are not new, it's been hinted through out the 6 seasons of the show leading up to the separation.
This is what we know for sure Elliot has signed divorce papers. But we don't know for sure if they are actually divorced yet. For that I guess we will have to wait til next season. But new developments have happened in the Stabler family so...who knows what will happen.
At the end of season 7, Benson & Stabler were not partners for about 3 episodes, Olivia requested a new partner after it became apparent that they both valued each other over the job.and since he couldn't give up the partnership she did. She transfered over to Computer crimes. However she worked a case with him and Fin leading her back to SVU as Elliot's partner. I doubt that anything was really resolved.
In the beginning of Season 8, Olivia goes undercover for the FBI and Elliot gets a temporary partner Dani Beck until she comes back. Which she did. (the undercover story developed due to Mariska Harigitay's maturnity leave.)

Yessss, another fan that's as addicted as I am! Detective Stabler got a divorce from his wife and she won custody of the kids. I don't think he's a child abuser, but he has anger issues against the perps. In '06, Mariska Hargitay (benson) went on maternity leave, so they had Benson work for the FBI and was replaced by the blonde Detective Beck. Now, Benson and Stabler are back as partners. I'm so watching two episodes of SVU tonight!

I have watched L&O: SVU for about four years now and I can't say that Elliot could be considered *abusive*....He does/did have quite an explosive temper and will go off and hit walls or lockers when he is mad. He is mainly mad at himself when he does this though.....
Kathy, his wife did leave him for awhile because he was never home, always on the job....missing the kids birthdays, school things, etc......his oldest daughter (drawing a blank at the moment on her name) got picked up for driving under the influence and he used his authority to make the charges *disappear*.....
Olivia asked for a transfer to another unit/department after the episode with Lou Diamond Phillips, he played a serial child molester...he killed the parents, kidnapped the two kids...eventually he killed the little boy and then took the daughter to a warehouse and locked her in a big box.....Olivia and Elliot found him in the warehouse, he had Elliot by the neck with a gun pointed at his head and Olivia could have shot Lou Diamond...but she didn't...she was too afraid that she would miss and hit Elliot...so after another sharp shooter took out Lou, Olivia and Elliot were back at the police station and Olivia told Ell that she couldn't be his partner anymore....she asked for a transfer and ended up still being around every once in awhile, working in computer crimes.......
LOVE this show...its sooo good....Can't wait for the new season to start....

Captain Kragan separated them because they were too close and would save each other before the public. Also she found her brother and did not tell the Captain and he was the suspect in a rape. She did not tell Elliot about it but he found out and covered for her. I believe when the Capt found out that is when he separated them.

They get back together. the only reasone they were apart was because Mariska Hargitay was pregnant. whatchin svu as we speak
