You don't. It takes a vacuum type compressor and a license to buy the freon. The cost of the equipment and freon makes it prohibitive to do this yourself. Call a serviceman.

To begin, you enroll in a refrigeration technology course. This can be found at a nearby community college, or you can enlist in the armed forces and have uncle train you as a refrigeration technician.

After 9 months of Tech school, you sign on with a company and become an apprentice under a Master. For the first year, you change filters, clean coils, and change fan belts.

During the second year, you learn how to measure the pressure and temperature of the refrigerant. If you discover a unit that is not performing correctly, you contact the Master and have him make the repair.

During the third year, after watching the Master add/recover refrigerant for the past two years, you study for and attempt to pass the refrigerant handler's exam. If you fail, you study for another year. If you pass, you invest $2- to $5000 in tools. At this time, you can add/recover refrigerant on your own.

If you try to pass gas without the card, the EPA does a cashectomy on your bank account to the tune of $20k.

Another tip: If you add the wrong amount or too much, it will cause bigger problems than an under-charged machine, and could be catastrophic.

OR, you call someone who knows what they are doing.

I'm an AC tech you can't add freeon your self, and you have no way of even knowing if that is your problem. There are a few things you can do before calling for service. First check your filter it should be changed about every 6 months. If it looks dirty replace it (it only cost a few dollars). Next go to the outdoor portion of your unit. Its usual on the side or behind your house but sometimes its on the roof. If its not on your roof there maybe bushes or something else blocking its air flow remove or trim the bushes. The outdoor unit must not have anything with in 3 feet of it (except for the side next to your house but should be at least 18" from your house. And nothing should be over it for at least 8 feet. That's about all you can do your self.

4 lbs is quite a bit to add to a system so this was probly the reason for his comment. 15 minutes is a liitle quick to do a thorough check on an air conditioning unit. Anytime freon is added to a system a service technician should wait close to 10 minutes after adding to allow the system to stabalize in order to do a proper superheat/subcool check in order to see if more or less is needed Not saying he didn't put the freon in, but I'm sure you could find another company that would take more time in doing a thorough check.

I am a licenced A/C mechanic, and even if you could buy the refrigerant you still need gauge's and other tools. It would cost you four times what it will cost to just have a pro do the job.

I'm sure that this is not a do-it yourself project. It is dangerous to you and the environment. You have to call a professional air conditioning person. Are you sure that your air filter is clean? This can prevent your A/C from working properly. Also make sure your dampers are open if you have forced air system.

the first step is to look in phone book for ac serviceman.....
2nd pick up phone and dial the number
3rd set up time for them to come out and service it.......
that's a job for someone who knows what they are doing because you need gauges you have high and low sides where you need to know if you are putting it in as a gas or liquid....all kinds of things you need to know............
