The different methods of clocking a fastball have changed over the years. At one point in the 1940s, they had Bob Feller pitching it was essentially a wind tunnel. Those results showed that Feller threw one pitch at 107 mph. But of course, those methods were not nearly as accurate as the radar guns of today. Mark Wohlers holds the record for the fastest clocked pitch using current methods in an actual game when he hit 103 in a spring training game.

There is also the legend of Steve Dalkowski who was a "Wild Thing" Ricky Vaughn type pitcher who played in the minors because he was never able to perfect his control. They say that he could throw at 110 mph.

About 20 years ago, Sports Illustrated ran a story about a pitching prospect for the Mets named Sidd Finch who had a 168 mile per hour fastball and a 120 mph curve.

It was in the April 1st edition. If you took the first letter of each word in the first paragraph, it spelled something like "Happy April Fool's Day from Sports Illustrated".

Anyway, back to your question. It appears that the record is 103 mph, held by Mark Wohlers of the Braves and Joel Zumaya of the Tigers.

No one knows the answer. Baseball was played for many years without speedguns. There is no way to know exactly how fast Bob Feller threw. Even the ones when Koufax and Gibson were in their prime had no exact measuring devices.
