Sometimes we never get over it, though the pain does fade with time.
It really helps to have someone who understands that this is not just any animal. For him, the dog was a family member who shared his life - that dog is a part of his soul.
Such love takes great compassion, you are blessed to have someone who feels so deeply. Allow him to talk about how he feels. And never tell him that it was "just a dog".
Please don't rush out to replace this dog. It can't be done. There may be others, but they will be different - like anyone in our lives.
Give him your love, understanding and patience.
Best wishes to both of you.

Recently I lost my beloved dog [Pomeranian]. All I know is that you really need to be there for him. Comfort him and tell him that he needs time to mourn her, and it will take a while. Then in time he will be ready for a new dog. But no matter what the dog still needs and has a special place in his heart. And you never really do get over the loss of a dog/pet/person.

That's a hard question. I don't know if it is posssible. Time takes the sting away. It does. I lost my 2 little beloved tea-cup poms 1 week apart last year. Very, very hard thing for me to deal with. It's only been 10 months now and I can barely think of them now and smile, without crying. I am grateful and thankful that I have the capacity within myself to love so deeply something other than myself, within a society that is all about getting what you can for yourself.. He will see the pet again. The spirit doesn't die. There is comfort in that.

I know how he feels. Well sorta, someone stole my 7 mo. old chihuahua/Jack Russel/Beagle Mix. She was my doll baby. I miss her soooo much. Give him a lot of support. I am looking to adopt from my local humane society. I cant live without a dog in the house. I just cant. You can never replace your lost pet. But you can save another pets life. and they are your pal for life. God Bless. Take Care and Good Luck

This really takes time. The only thing I can suggest is a lot of support from you. We had to put our dog to sleep in February and I'm still having problems with it but with each day life without our dog gets easier. I know he will be in our hearts for a lifetime and that is a good thing. He was loved and well looked after.

time heals wounds; mourn the loss and when the time is right, you can fill your heart with love with a new pet but will never forget Man's best friend; you can' t rush emotions
