why should anyone adult read for pleaure?

instead of reading, i think adults should all do other beneficial activites, like spend time with family, friends, tv, EXERCISE, EXERCISE, relaxing, etc.

I am a family doctor and i feel that reading pleaure books will do nothing in my life. I know how to read, and would like to do something pleasurable in my relaxing time. I rather just do somehting else. I am not going to school, so why should i practice reading.

People who are in school should practice reading, and not adults (this is my opinion, it is your choice if you want to read or not, so dont get me wrong)

your thoughts, feelings, motivations, etc
thank you

Adult.

As you said, for pleasure. Also, I learn so much from reading - and that certainly includes reading fiction. Reading improves my grammar and spelling and writing abilities. It's relaxing. But mostly I learn about things I'd never know if I didn't read. And, a book provided me with my philosophy...my most valuable possession.

Do you know that a fictional book, Atlas Shrugged, was found by the Library of Congress to be the second most influential book (after the bible, also fiction)?

And, with so many books on tape, we can all 'read' while exercising.

And, it's not like it's either/or. You can read and still do many other things.

Remember, it's not a moral issue. It's a personal choice.

I am a college student and I believe that there are many things that you can fill your time with, but reading is important in that you can expand your knowledge of vocabulary and understanding of other cultures and history. No matter what you are reading about, historical fiction, fantasy, or novels, all writing has some aspect of history, or legend involved. You can also learn some of the same things from TV (vocabulary, history, ect...) however in most cases there is simply not enough time or resources to include everything you could learn from a book.
Take for example Harry Potter, the movies made after the book are done very well, and someone who does not read can understand the story line just fine, however after reading the book you know so much more about what is happening and why and how. You learn more vocabulary, meet other fantasy creatures, and understand the characters better.
I suppose what I am trying to say is that reading gives better rounded and balanced concepts.

I am an adult. Early 30's, married, job, 5 kids. I am also a writer. I read for pleasure because I enjoy it. As a doctor I hope you appreciate how much control the mind has over the body. Reading through my life has helped me keep my blood pressure low, helped me keep my spirits up and also helped me relate to my own readers (as a writer). Reading is my relaxing time. It is MY time (also of emotional benefit). It also encourages my children to read and to want to read.

Having said that, let me point out I also make time for family and social activities. I exercise, I play with my kids, I walk with my husband--I do my best to stay fit.

You also may consider that different people read at different speeds. I can read a 700 page novel in my spare time in a few days. If I can I can take the day and read the same book in less than 8 hrs. My husband reads the same book in about a week.

My point is, if you don't find reading pleasurable then don't do it. Do the things you find pleasurable. Be active, go outdoors (some of are allergic to most things with leaves or fur so we have to limit our outdoor activities)--do the things you enjoy. Enjoying life has physical health benefits.

If you are reading for pleasure, then you enjoy it. It is no longer reading for practice. It is what I (an adult) and many other people do for fun.

So to anwser your question: peolpe read for pleasure, for pleasure (If this seems like an akward anwser, it is because the question was so poorly stated; try reading, it might help you in that area).

Furthermore, there are far more satisfying and intersting things to be found in books, both fiction and non. I haven't watched TV in in 9 years. Why? because there is always something more intersting to read.

t is frightening to hear that a medical professional considers reading a chore. Any real doctor will spend part of his or her time reading journals; science changes with time, you are supposed to keep up with it!

I read because I enjoy submerging myself in another world for a little while. A good book will get me thinking about our world and what we might need to change/fix and what I can do about it. I actually enjoy reading and will only read for pleasure something that I enjoy, I will do work related reading (and I hope you do too otherwise I wouldn't want to be your patient) but it is not as much fun. Reading is my hobby so I don't consider it a waste of time, of course I am careful to balance my life and so I don't spend all my free time reading.

I am an adult, but I have always enjoyed reading books of my own choosing.

If you do not enjoy reading, then it is not a pleasurable activity for you, so when you read, it will not be for pleasure.

However, I DO enjoy reading a well-written book. I even enjoy reading books that are not so well-written, if they have really great story lines. So for me, reading is a pleasurable activity, something that I enjoy doing when I am relaxing.

So to answer your question of why - those who find pleasure in reading should do so for that pleasure, and those who do not find pleasure in reading should not.

PS. I am an adult
