I would say, the carpet is ruined.. Especially if it was really really wet.. We are going through the same drying out process except for us it wasn't just rain water it's actual raw sewage.. We got rid of our carpets and any cardboard boxes that got wet.. We have four heavy duty fans and a dehumidifer working.. We also because of the nature of the water... mopped the floors and wiped the walls with a strong bleach solution.. We're presently waiting for a professional cleaning company to finish the job... What a nightmare... Fortunately, we didn't lose too much, most of our belongings are sealed in spacebags and inside Rubbermaid containers and stored high in the basement.. good luck...

Getting rid of the source is the key. Our basement got flooded from hurricane IVAN. Bottom line is -- whatever got wet had to go. That included the drywall, insulation, carpet, boxes, etc. You get the picture. After removing all contaminated material, I ran the dehumidifier at it's highest setting. Then got a garden sprayer and sprayed pure bleach on everything. Ventilation is highly recommended. The bleach killed all mold and mildew smells in the concrete and wall cavities. Then I sealed the concrete after everything was dry. It's a lot of work, but no one gets sick now. Good luck.

Febreeze? Dude, you watch too much TV. If you think Febreeze could solve a problem like that, you don't know much about housecleaning. Get your carpet professionally cleaned, using an enzyme based deodorizer.

Ruined. I hope you have home owners insurance because that happened at my parents house and they had to get all new carpet. Otherwise it will grow dangerous toxic mold.

I would buy a new carpet, or put down hardwood.
