If you have an E46 model (1999-2005), sometimes you can get it to reset by sliding the switch back and forth a few times, then push the switch up for the tilt function.
Otherwise, take it to a dealer for to reset the ECU.

The BMW sunroof has a safety feature, where if it meets an obstruction (such as your arm... or neck), it will immediately reverse. This is done pretty much by resistance (ie; the motor pulling more than a preset current limit).

It is possible that your sunroof tracks are lacking in lube and creating too much resistance to the point where the sunroof "thinks" it is hitting a foreign object.

Well, my BMW isn't new (it's a '97) but I believe they still use the same sunroof switch. You're probably pressing the button upward towards the ceiling which causes it to close and then slide it into the "tilt" position. If you want to close it, slide the button toward the front of the car (opposite of opening it which you slide to the rear).
I hope this helps, because that's how it is in mine. Don't know about yours though...
Well, good luck!
