The town of Guernica was destroyed from the air in the Spanish Civil War by the Fascists. This was the first time a town was destroyed from the air. Picasso painted the picture to show the world the horrors of war and the menace of Fascism. Of course he was a Communist and this huge painting was propaganda art. It shows how art can be used for propaganda purposes. Picasso mostly used oil paint for his cubist paintings.
