I can't say these are my top 10. And they are not in order either, but all are very skilled, intelligent, passionate artists. Some I placed b/c they broke barriers.

1.) it wasnt a list of "greatest rappers alive", it was a list of Hottest MC's in the game right now.
2.) lol c'mon this is MTV, the same people sittin at this round table putting jay-z at #8 are the same people who just a year ago sat down at the round table and said Jay-z is the greatest rapper ever...MTV isnt consistent, and they own no real credibility within the hip hop community.
3.)here's my top 10 (i am going by relevance in hip hop today, yea Rakim is great but he hasnt been relevant in hip hop for 7 years)
1.) Nas
2.) Jay-z
3.) Outkast
4.) Common
5.) Kanye West
6.) Lupe Fiasco
7.) Talib Kweli
8.) The Game
9.) Mos Def
10.) AZ

To answer this question you have to state what is considered the standard of greatest. It is so funny that in the NBA there really is no question that Jordan, bird and magic are considered (quite possible) the 3 best basketball players of all time. Regardless of the mcgrady's, kobe's or Kidd's that come around. (Not to say they are not good, but they cannot be compared to Jordan, etc)
Unlike hip-hop where the newest rapper that comes out, with a hot song, or sells alot of records is considered the greatest.....i guess it is because the history is not enforced so people can understand it. However i guess we usually place our favorites in the top ten...meh..
KANE
RAKIM
KRS-ONE
ICE-CUBE
SLICK-RICK
NAS
GZA
KOOL G RAP
BIG PUNISHER
TUPAC
Really cannot put people like jay or wanye on here....i can pull out a lyric from rakim...that pretty much blows away wanye and jay whole catalog....

Nas easy, First of all he's the only one in that list that is a living legend. Second he released the most albums out of all. Third as he says (collliding with big names that could of made your career stop, all that and your man is still here and still hot) We all know thats true such as 2pac. Plus he;s the realest rapper out of all those guys and gets the most respect overall.
